Strife of Brian

wedding ring

Brian and Anna McGuinn

Our hearts go out today to Florida husband Brian McGuinn, who showed that love can conquer all when he took on a 10ft pile of rubbish to find his wife’s diamond engagement ring – and won.

OK, so it was his fault in the first place – he’d accidentally binned the ring after wife Anna had handed it to him when she took a shower - but who could have blamed him for opting out after realising that, to find it, he’d have to sift through hundreds of kilos of other people’s household waste, like looking for a $10,000 needle in an unspeakably foul haystack.

But not Brian. Having tracked down the garbage truck to the tip after realising his mistake, he donned protective clothing and set to work on a pile measuring taller than a man and as wide as a house.
Luckily, a bulldozer driver flattened the heap out for him – but, not surprisingly, the man’s help stopped there. Brian was on his own, so he got down on his hands and knees and plunged his hands in.

'Nastiness you wouldn't believe,' said Brian when asked what he came up against. 'It was absolutely disgusting. It stunk beyond belief. The smell was God-awful. Everything unsanitary you could think of crossed my path at least a couple times.”
But then, after spotting an item that he knew was from their rubbish, Brian plunged his fingers in one last time and proved that, sometimes, where there’s muck, there’s diamonds – by pulling out the long-lost ring.

“I was ecstatic,” he said. “It was like winning the lottery. It was probably one of the best moments ever.
“It was all down to perseverance,' he added. “A lot of people don't find things; it's gone. But I knew I had to try.”

Good old Brian – but have you gone even further for a loved one? Tell us below…
