Our favourite DIY favours

Pretty wedding favours

Wedding favours are one of the most traditional aspects of a wedding day – and they remain as popular as ever.

Here at Shottle Hall we never cease to be amazed by the creative ways our brides and grooms show their appreciation to their guests.

So, if you are thinking of making your favours yourself and are looking for inspiration, we have some great ideas.

In Italy, where favours originate and were known as Bonboniere, couples used delicate tulles and fine boxes to encapsulate five sugared almonds, representing health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity.

Today there are many other creative options out there, and doing-it-yourself not only makes them more personal, but can also be more cost-effective.

From CDs with the favourite music of the bride and groom, lottery tickets to silver picture frames with a photo of the happy couple, anything goes these days. One of our favourite favours is homemade jam, perfect for a vintage wedding or country fete theme. You can even be creative with the type of jam you make; the BBC Good Food website has some great recipes.

Personalised sweetie jars are gaining in popularity, probably because it’s easy to match your colour scheme with the sweeties you put inside.  Often, our brides collect jars of different shapes and sizes from car boot sales and antique shops  and retro sweets such as Love Hearts and jelly beans make pretty fillings.

Tea bag favours are perfect for an afternoon tea party theme which is incredibly popular with our couples at the moment. Pick a pretty herbal teabag, pop it in a treat bag and make labels with your names, and wedding date - The Perfect Blend.

An eco-friendly option, is giving guests a packet of seeds – Love-in-a-Mist, Forget-Me-Nots and Honesty are all perfect. Personalise the packet with your names and wedding date and a picture of what your  guest can expect to nurture!

Homemade cookies are a very cheap option, but look pretty and are always popular. Particularly talented couples ice each guest’s initial or name onto the cookie.

Of course, depending on the number of guests you have invited to your wedding breakfast, making the favours yourself can be time-consuming, so why not host a prep party and rope in people to help?  Invite your bridesmaids and family, order a pizza and eat, drink and be merry while you make short work of your wedding projects.
